Job Description

Balkan Investigative Regional Network, BIRN Hub, seeks to hire a part-time Editor-in-Chief, for its Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence Programme.

Deadline for applications February 10, 2017.

Locations: Can be based anywhere but must be in a position to travel throughout the Balkan region.

The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence was established in 2007 and over the past ten years this prestigious journalistic programme has provided financial and professional support for almost one hundred journalists to research and write cross-border stories.

We are currently seeking an experienced senior editor, to train and mentor the participants during their research and to edit their articles produced as a result of the programme.

The programme aims to address the continued need in the Balkan region to foster high-quality reporting and professional development of journalists. Programme is designed for journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia.

The successful candidate will ensure that the programme maintains and develops its high profile in the media community and among the wider public in the Balkans and beyond.

The selected candidate will:

  • Be a native English speaker with a track record in print and/or online media and experience of editing long, magazine-style articles.
  • Have experience of investigative reporting and a knowledge of British libel law.
  • Have exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate cross-culturally.
  • Have experience of journalism training and/or in mentoring reporters
  • Be an effective time manager able to work with ten fellows at the same time
  • Be in a position to travel throughout the Balkan region

Previous experience in the Balkan region is a strong advantage, but not eliminatory for potential candidates.

The contract is signed until the end of the calendar year, with the possibility of extension. To apply, submit your CV and cover letter to, no later than February 10, 2017.

The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence is supported by ERSTE Foundation and the Open Society Foundations, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN.
