Job Description

Welcome to the ITV News Traineeship recruitment for 2016/17

ITV News has been providing award winning news coverage for over 50 years and we’re very proud of it. Every day millions of viewers watch our programmes on-air and connect with us online to get the latest, breaking news from Britain’s most popular commercial broadcaster.

On this scheme you will be based in one of our newsrooms and will benefit from working alongside experienced and talented multi-platform journalists who will teach you the basics of TV and online journalism. This will be combined with classroom based learning to ensure that we equip you with the core skills to build a career in broadcast news. The traineeship will be hard work and you’ll need real dedication and stamina to be successful. You will be supported by some of the best in the industry who will challenge you and push you to deliver to the highest standards.

This is a nine-month programme starting on Monday 3rd October 2016 and we are looking for 11 talented recruits, seven of whom will work in one of our English Regional newsrooms in ITV Anglia (Norwich); ITV Central (Birmingham); ITV Granada (Media City, Salford); ITV Meridian (Whiteley, near Southampton); ITV Tyne Tees & Border (Gateshead); ITV West Country (Bristol); or ITV Yorkshire (Leeds). One trainee will be based in Cardiff providing national news for Wales at ITV Cymru Wales. Two trainees will be working in our Network newsroom based in London, and in addition, we have an opportunity for one trainee at ITV Channel (St Helier).

You’ll receive a salary of £22,063 for all roles outside of London (£24,000 in London) and five weeks annual leave pro-rata’d during the scheme. A very high percentage of those who graduate from the programme have gone on to secure permanent jobs with both ITV News and ITV more widely, although there are no guarantees of continued employment beyond the 9 months.

Am I eligible to apply?
If you’re talented, enthusiastic and can show us you’re committed to a career in journalism then we want to hear from you. We’re particularly interested in people who have committed themselves to a career in journalism, either through their writing, work experience, academic choices or their career so far. If you’re looking to change your career and you’ve had an interest in Journalism in the past, your application will be welcome.

You will need to be over the age of 18 by 1 October 2016. Our development programme involves attending short periods of training in other parts of the country so you must be prepared to travel (ITV will provide accommodation and travel costs). You need to be based in the UK or Channel Islands and have the right to work here, as ITV News cannot sponsor work permits for its traineeship schemes.
